Stone

Southern Africa has a mineral-rich ridge called ‘The Great Dyke’, and is believed to be 2.5 billion years old. The Dyke is about 500 kilometres long. Different stretches of it produce different type of stone, in terms of colour and hardness, with over 200 colours having been discovered over the years. Most professional sculptors believe that the harder the stone the better the sculpture, with hardness generally ranging from 1.5 – 5.0 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness, with granite and a few others beyond 5.
